Eighth Again

Fulham 0 Charlton 0

I've been rather busy as term approaches its end and there are lots of exams to correct and reports to write at the Centre, so I've been neglecting the blog of late. However, I am up to date with the marking for a while, so here goes.

According to reports, Charlton should have won at Fulham, two or three open goal chances having been missed, mostly by Shaun Bartlett, but even if a win had been achieved, it would have made little difference, in terms of league position, because of Middlesbrough's defeat at Aston Villa and Tottenham losing at Southampton. Charlton in fact moved up from 9th to 8th. All the same, as the Inspector implies in his rant about the big clubs, it is getting to the stage where it doesn't really matter.

Are Charlton going to repeat their 7th place from last season, or the 9th from two years ago, or do a little better than that and play in the UEFA Cup next season?

And if they do manage to play in the UEFA Cup, how far will they get? And will that matter? I wonder. Maybe it would be best if the three 'biggest' clubs in the top European footballing countries just cleared off and played among themselves, as the Inspector suggests.

Certainly the Chelsea - Barcelona game last night was an advertisement for European football at its best, but usually these games aren't that good. Would it not, maybe, be better to have a more interesting and competitive domestic competition, including the lower divisions, and leave the 'big' European clubs to their own devices?

Quiz-wise, we were back to winning ways on Monday, despite being without Sam, and mysteriously, the young persons failed to appear at all.

It would be a pity not to see teams like Madrid getting a well-deserved come-uppance at the hands of lowlier sides; in any case fortunes in the Spanish league, as well as the Premier, can change overnight - what criteria would we use for observing these distinctions?
