Charlton Athletic and the media, Madrid daily life and the quiz team.
Thursday, October 07, 2004 Not as Bad as Charlton The Quiz Team 3rd out 5 - lots of Spot Prizes There was a festive air down the pub last Monday, as we have been celebrating its tenth anniversary over the past week, so there was some new sexy red lighting and a large spotlight which shone directly into my eyes until our much-respected opponent Luis arrived and kindly sat right in front of it. It was announced that there would be one round about Ireland, in honour of the pub's Irish provenance (actually it is owned, as I have said before, by a Spanish guy and his good lady, who comes from Birmingham) and there were special guest sports questions from Dave the barman - he comes from Bristol. In fact the only really Irish event was some Celtic music on the Saturday night. The other innovation, for this week only, was the increase in the number of 'spots', as we regulars get to call them, to 15, and they proved to be shirts and tops, branded with the brewer's name, that kind of thing, though I won a pint for knowing which well-known British monarch had the same birthday as our dear landlady. Well she mentions it quite a bit. As a team, we slipped back into 3rd, and our fortunes are sort of mirroring Charlton's, though we probably did do a bit better on the night than Charlton had done at Highbury on the Saturday. Oh yes, there was a live match on the upstairs TV. Crystal Palace v Fulham. No-one was watching it and I even forgot to find out the final score, only discovering the news of Palace's first win of the season the next evening. And the planned "embarrass Spotty Parker" campaign for the Monday reserve game between Charlton and Chelsea (3-0 to Charlton) fell through as Chelsea didn't play him in the end. I wonder if he will come back. And would anyone really want him to? Full term has recommenced, so this finds me in the middle of the most tiring week of the whole year: meeting new classes and getting used to different rooms and new routines. I have been exhausted every night. I could put it down to my age, but my younger colleagues are no different. It is a tiring and at times stressful job, teaching. The only good thing is that the year gets easier the longer it goes on, so that by March the whole thing is almost on automatic pilot, but just as good, I have to point out. More at the weekend. posted by Jonathan Blake @ 01:18 0 comments 0 Comments: Post a Comment << Home Reference Links Frankie Valley All Quiet in the East Stand (Inspector Sands) Addicks Championship Diary (Wyn Grant) New York Addick Livescore Charlton Athletic FC Latest Posts Imperial Leather Update Live Score Blues - Bad for Reds Two Much Better Results Abbotsinch and Paisley Gilmour Street Ready to Return Two Indifferent Results The Way Forward The Lady in Boots Night Thoughts Late Extra - Archives - May 2004 June 2004 July 2004 August 2004 September 2004 October 2004 November 2004 December 2004 January 2005 February 2005 March 2005 April 2005 May 2005 June 2005 July 2005 August 2005 September 2005 October 2005 November 2005 December 2005 January 2006 February 2006 March 2006 April 2006 May 2006 June 2006 July 2006 August 2006 September 2006 October 2006 November 2006 December 2006 January 2007 February 2007 March 2007 April 2007 May 2007 June 2007 August 2007 September 2007 October 2007 November 2007 December 2007 January 2008 March 2008 April 2008 free hit counter About Me Name: Jonathan Blake Location: Argüelles, Madrid West, Spain "Jonathan Blake" came into being when I was supplementing my teaching salary by editing a small tourist magazine which was distributed free every month to visitors at a five-star hotel in the centre of Madrid. The production and layout were all done by non-English speakers, and that meant that all the writing had to be done by me. My own name appeared as editor and also over what I regarded as the best piece of the month. "Jonathan Blake" (the first name and surname of two acquaintances from university) was the name I made up (I thought then, and still do, that it has a nice ring to it) for second-best pieces and general features. It's nice to be able to resurrect Jonathan after all this time to help me out with the writing.... View my complete profile
